A Google-a-Day Puzzle for Tuesday, May 10th

As we’ve reported before, our good friends over at Google are starting up a daily puzzle challenge. Each day’s puzzle will task your googling skills a little more, leading you to Google mastery.

And much to our enjoyment, they’ve decided to share the puzzles with us at GeekDad (hmm… Google a Day? GD? GeekDad?), so each morning at 12:01am ET you’ll see a new puzzle, and the previous day’s answer (in invisitext) posted here.

SPOILER WARNING: As a test, we’re going to leave the comments on so people can work together to find the answer. As such, if you want to figure it out all by yourself, DON’T READ THE COMMENTS!

Also, with the knowledge that because others may publish their answers before you do, if you want to be able to search for information without accidentally seeing the answer somewhere, you can use the Google-a-Day site’s search tool, which will automatically filter out published answers, to give you a spoiler-free experience.

And now, without further ado…

TODAY’S PUZZLE:

You are in the United States, but you are closer to China than your friend in Wellington, NZ. How is that possible?

YESTERDAY’S ANSWER (HIGHLIGHT TO SEE):

Search [the High One] to learn it’s Denali. Search [Denali Big Five] to find you’d be looking for five wildlife species: caribou, moose, wolves, Dall sheep and grizzly bears.

Profitable Promotions Utilizing Advertising Balloons

Advertising Balloons = Profitable Promotions!

Advertising balloons come in all shapes and sizes, from tiny rubber inflatable advertising ballons to giant zeppelins hanging in the sky over major sporting events. All of them have one thing in common: the use of gases lighter than air to hover, attracting the attention of passersby due to the movement produced by wind. This means that they automatically attract the human eye in the outdoors, wheter the observers be driving or walking by.

The multitude of purposes that the balloons provide is evident: imagine the opening of a new bank. Without some sort of temporary attraction, it would be difficult to otherwise alert potential customers to its presence. In addition to larger advertising balloons outside, perhaps the bank could distribute smaller, uninflated latex ballons inside, also branded with their logo; perhaps they could even hand out water balloons for the kids! With this many applications, the possibilities are limitless with advertising balloons. It’s easy to imagine that larger balloons would have a much more attractive power, due to the increase in size and space. Larger Mylar ballons can be produced in a wide variety of shapes, providing a personal touch, perhaps a company mascot that can endear the customers.

Blimps

Advertising blimps come in many affordable sizes!

Finally, there is the enormous attractive power of the giant blimps, popularized by tire manufacturer Goodyear. The blimps hang lusciously in the sky, attracting zombified sports fans, who are likely to purchase tires, like horses to hay. With its flashing bright lights and almost ominous hovering omnipresence, it is the ultimate in balloon advertising. Perhaps in the future some sort of stunts should be pulled off using advertising ballons exclusively: a repeat of the floating lawn chair, perhaps, with silk-screened balloons bearing the emblems of a major bank? There is an entire world full of waiting to be advertised to with balloons.

GeekDad Challenge of the Week: Dog vs. Orchid

Flickr user Timtak, CC license

It’s just past two o’clock in the morning and fortunately your kids are asleep. Unfortunately, you are not. There you stand under the twinkling stars, shivering in your boxer shorts, holding a leash and contemplating the veracity of the phrase man’s best friend. It wouldn’t perhaps be possible for your dog to, you know, just do its thing so you could stumble back to bed, rather than endlessly wandering the perfect semicircle allowed by its 10-foot leash to find the *perfect* spot, would it?

No.

Instead, this is how it goes down: you stand on a straight sidewalk with your hand at your waist, three feet from the ground and exactly at the sidewalk’s edge. At the other end of the 10-foot leash is your dog, whose collar is one foot from the ground. The dog has an equiprobable chance of, you know, doing its thing anywhere within the leash’s reach and in fact adds 30 inches to the leash’s reach due to the K9 ability to “hang it,” with neck pointing toward you and back end facing outward into the dark, dark night.

And somewhere out there is your neighbors prize orchid. (Why — you may ask — did your neighbor plant a prize orchid along the side of a public sidewalk? Never mind. It’s two in the morning and you shouldn’t be asking questions like that.) Here’s the thing about the orchid: its roots draw nutrients from 16 inches in each direction, but near its stalk is a 4-inch square kill zone.

Considering your dog’s you-know-what as a point source, what is the probability your erstwhile best friend will fertilize the orchid’s roots without killing the plant itself? (Discount the kill potential of all that wandering that precedes, well, you know.)

Submit the solution to the GeekDad I Want To Win Gift Certificate Mailbox by the end of the day on Friday and you’ll have a chance to win a $50.00 ThinkGeek Gift Certificate!
